2-1. Characteristics of NP and OP derivatives / SUNFOL NP, OP series

  • Solubility
    NP series have ether group which is related with the hydrophilic property, in their structure. This ether linkage is increased in accordance with the increased number of moles of ethylene oxide added to one hydrophobic group. During soluble in water, it exhibits a tendency to increased viscosity at initial stage, and turns to gel phase without disperse into cold water at certain concentration. So it is necessary to dissolve in warm water with agitation and also, it and be prevent to gelification by adding low molecular alcohol, glycol, other solvent or salts, Solubility into organic solvents and Oils is depended on the moles of adducted ethylene oxide. But solubility into aliphatic hydrocarbon base decreases dramatically according to increase adducted EO moles Low moles of EO adducted on can solve into mineral oils and paraffin series, but all of NP/OP products solves into aromatic hydrocarbon, such as benzene, toluene and ketone or into alcohol and chlorinated hydrocarbon.

  • Cloud Point
    When the temperature of and aqueous solution of EO adducted nonionic surfactant is raised gradually by heating, bonded water molecules are disconnected one by one in accordance with the increase of temperature, and the hydrophilic property of the surfactant is decreased accordingly, Eventually, the surfactant becomes insoluble in water, and is suddenly separated out form the water. The solution loses its initial transparent appearance, and tums into a turbid emulsion, this turning point is termed cloud point, This point rises with the increase in the number of EO added.

  • Chemical Stability
    This series have excellent resistance for acid, alkali, salt and hard eater, and do not hydrolysis under high concentrated acid and alkali solution. But appear a tendency to decrease surface activity under acid and alkali solution. And in case of low HLB product under concentrated salt solution, it makes some salt, but not effected surface activity, such as cleaning, penetrate force under hard water. Under anhydride state, it is possible to corrosion steel, copper, zinc and others.

  • Surface Activity
    Surface activity is changed in according with added moles of EO, and in case of 6 moles of EO adducts, the surface tension is reached minimum and rises with the increase in the number of moles of ethylene oxide. Dispersion power depend on dispersants, but normally stay excellent levels. Because SUNFOL NP/OP Series are derivatives of ethylene oxide adducts, foaming power is middle stage among the other surfactants. Foaming power rises with adducted EO molds, but do not reach same level of anionic compound, such as alkyl sulfate, and makes unstable foams, which are removed easily. NP/OP series have excellent emulsify characteristics for stable emulsifying products. Especially, SUNFOL OP series have wonderful penetration property than the other surfactants. So, high moles of EO adducts acts as good emulsifier at emulsify polymerization process.
    SUNFOL NP series act as very suitable emulsifier for mineral oils, fatty oils and organic solvents. NP-4~NP-7 are suitable in mineral oil and aliphatic hydro-carbon, NP-8~NP-12 are for aromatic hydrocarbon, NP-20~NP-40 are excellent surface activity around cloud point. Cleaning effects of NP series appear best cleaning effect under HLB 11~13, and excellent surface activity around cloud point.
