Sogokju is a traditional Korean liquor first made in Baekje and has history of nearly 1,500 years. Hansan Sogokju is the modern recreation of Sogokju after its long-awaited absence. You’ll enjoy its rich and authentic taste and flavor, which have been vividly recorded since ancient times.
With its long history, Sogokju has many associated stories: after the fall of Baekje about 1,500 years ago, its displaced people were said to brew Sogokju to overcome their deep resentment and sorrow in white mourning garments; a seonbi (scholar) moving to Seoul to take the gwageo (national civil service examination) put up in an inn near Hansan (Mt. Han) but had to go back to his home as he failed to take the test while enjoying Sogokju; a host offered Sogokju to the guest and the guest fell asleep after drinking too much Sogokju as it was very delicious; and a thief broke into a house but was caught as the thief was drunk on Sogokju. Such interesting anecdotes give Sogokju as well as Hansan Sogokju the nickname of “a liquor that makes you unable to walk.”
Hansan Sogokju is a Korea’s high-class traditional liquor with high volume of alcohol and sweet flavor. Our company, Baekje Myungga Jujo Co., Ltd., recreates the spirit of Baekje which existed in Korea about 1,500 years ago by brewing Hansan Sogokju, the renovated version of Sogokju. Sogokju is a noble liquor enjoyed by the royal family of Baekje.
Hansan Sogokju will be Korea’s first and the last grain wine made of 100% grain.
Hansan Sogokju is also a liquor whose recipe has been handed down by the head family of the Hansan Lee Clan. Among our ancestors in the Hansan Lee Clan, Lee Saek would be the most famous historical figure and he would surely enjoy Sogokju.
The main ingredients of Hansan Sogokju is glutinous rice, clean water, and yeast produced and extracted in the neighboring region of Mt. Han (Hansan) in Seocheon, famous for its natural beauty and cleanness. We brew Hansan Sogokju at low temperature for 100 days in a cave owned by our company through our unique brewing technique which combines traditional and modern methods.
Now Hansan Sogokju is a famous liquor for banquets and even state dinners and frequently used for proposing toasts at such occasions. This means Hansan Sogokju can be called the one traditional liquor which represents Korea.
