Product Information
Silver is a white, bright, soft,
ductile and malleable material, it is the best conductor of heat and
electricity. Silver is a non-reactive element; however it is attacked by nitric
acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid. It doesn’t oxidize in natural air but
reacts with hydrogen sulfide available in air and produces silver sulfide. This
is why the silver materials need regular maintenance. It stays isolated in
water.

Occurrence
of silver
Silver occurs in its native form and
ores such as argentite and horn silver, lead, lead-zinc, copper, gold and
copper-silver ores. Silver has stunning metallic luster in its pure form. It is
slightly harder than gold and is extremely ductile and malleable. It is stable
in air but attacked by ozone, hydrogen sulphide and sulfur due to the
production of silver sulfide.
Applications
of Silver
Silver is a precious metal and its
halides and nitrates are commonly used in photography. Its major uses are in
electrical and electronic industries, photography and domestic uses like
cutlery, mirrors and ornaments.
Silver is used in the electrical and
electronics industry. The catalytic characteristics of silver make it suitable
for using in the oxidation reactions. Other applications include dentistry and
high capacity zinc long lasting batteries.
Silver chloride is used as glass
cement. Silver nitrate is used in inedible inks, medicines and in preparing
chemicals. Silver sulphide is used for metal work and self resetting circuits.
Silver is used in the diverse medical
applications such as in anti-bacterial creams, gels in bandages that are applied
on the burned or wounded parts of the patients. In hospital, antibacterial
glass is coated with silver to avoid the infection dispersion in the
environment. The combination of silver with other metals such as mercury and
tin is useful to produce amalgam for tooth filling.
