Global Retail Big Players Share Online Export Know-how

The Korea International Trade Association (Chairman, Kim In-ho), KOTRA (CEO, Kim Jae-hong) and the Small and medium Business Corporation (President, Lim Chae-un) jointly held ‘CBT Conference Inviting Big Buyers’ at COEX, Seoul on March 2 (Wednesday).


In the conference, the retail big players of cross-border trade (the buying and selling of goods and services via online regardless of national boundaries) which is emerging as a new export channel directly shared their sales strategies and success know-how. On the side, one-on-one export consultation meetings between the international retail big buyers and Korean SMEs of consumer goods took place.


Despite the recent export slowdown, cross-border trade has high export potential as it has posted 115 percent of annual growth rate over the last five years and is attracting great attention from the consumer goods export industries. In particular, the event was bustling with some 1,000 participants from the companies who are interested in making inroads into overseas as the conference was held associated with Korea’s largest consumer goods exhibition ‘2016 Seoul International Sourcing Fair’ held at COEX on the same day.


During the conference, the CEOs of global shopping malls who are leading cross-border trade at each region participated in as speakers and introduced a variety of entry strategies ranging from the trends in online market to success cases. Amazon and eBay shared their views on global open market sector, VIP.COM and ACCOMMATE made presentations on e-commerce market in Chinese speaking region and Qoo10 discussed the market trends in East Asia. Lastly, the working-level officials at KITA, KOTRA and SBC explained the number of CBT supporting projects such as consultation conference by inviting overseas buyers, the programs to enter into global shopping malls, etc.

In addition, Do Kyung-hwan from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy which is exerting its every effort to support e-commerce industry and resolve difficulties stated words of encouragement to urge industries’ interest.


Meanwhile, Lee Jae-chool, managing director at KITA said “Despite the difficult external environment such as the decrease of Korea’s export volume by 8 percent last year, cross-border trade is emerging as a new entry channel into overseas with its infinite growth potential.” He also added “Upon this conference, I hope that Korea’s competitive consumer goods producers will be interested in making inroads into overseas and tap into the global e-commerce market.”
