It has not yet been identified how long ago people started using soy sauce in Korea, but it seems the history of soy sauce is at least 1,500 years old.
Regarding the origin of soy sauce, there is a record in Yeoljeon (biographies) of Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) that Kim Yu-sin, who was on the way to war, had his subordinate bring a bowl of jangsu (lactic acid fermented rice tea) from his house when he passed by his home and knew that his house had no problem after tasting the rice water.
The method of manufacturing bamboo salt soy sauce in Korea in the 20th century was developed by Kim Ilhoon, a famous doctor who is known to surpass Chinese medicinal sages Hua Tuo or Bian Que, and then spread. In his book Gusesinbang (The Universe and the God's Medicine), he introduced bamboo salt soy sauce as God's medicine, a miracle drug and elixir that cured incurable diseases.

In 1926 Dr. Kim Il-hoon invented the Bamboo salt for the first time in Korea. Since 1926, the Bamboo salt has been made with the same traditional artisan methods. Dr. Kim (1909-1992) was a famous doctor and a philosopher in Korea
Dr. Kim’s only-daughter and grandchildren have been running the business in the mountains of southern Korea following three generations since 1999.
Ocksujung is the brand of our company, a combination of the words from the founder Ms. Kim Youn-ock’s name and Sujung (水精), standing for salt in Chinese characters.
Ocksujung has 5 registered patents on the technologies to manufacture bamboo slat. Ocksujung’s bamboo salt complies with the highest standards of appearance under Korea Standard (KS) of bamboo salt.
