Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of sanitization in public spaces has been widely recognized, leading to skyrocketing local and global demand for sanitary products including sanitizers. Notably, YanmaGNS’s escalator handrail sanitizers have attracted a lot of attention around the world as a replacement for existing sanitizers as, unlike the later, they do not require an alcohol-based agent, are relatively easy to install, and are offered at a reasonable price.

In March 2002, the matching agent of tradeKorea contacted YanmaGNS, as it had the export rights to Clearwin products, in order to introduce the company to a buyer in Hong Kong who had inquired about sanitizing products through Alibaba.com. The matching agent learned about the Clearwin products and took pictures of them in action on escalators in Seoul subway stations and the COEX Mall and sent them to the buyer. The buyer expressed interest and continued to discuss the products while asking for further technical information.

The Clearwin products utilize the power generated by the turning force of the handrail to activate the sanitizing function, while the LED lamp on the sanitizer radiates UV-C on to the handrail to eliminate any infectious agents. The LED lamp lasts for up to 10,000 hours, i.e. about two years before replacement.

According to the COVID-19 statistics for Hong Kong as of December 2, 2020, the country had recorded 6,397 confirmed cases and 109 deaths. Although the number of confirmed cases is not very high, the mortality is noticeable and there has recently been a spike in the total number of cases. The Hong Kong government announced that all educational institutions including kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools will be closed from December 2 to the end of the year, when the Christmas holidays finally come to an end.

The buyer reviewed the available information and placed a sample order, on the basis of which he was clearly impressed with the technical prowess and price of the Clearwin product. The buyer made a first formal purchase of 20 escalator handrail sanitizers (worth USD 10,000), and has so far placed 4 orders for a total of 160 units (USD 80,000).

The sales representative of YanmaGNS has since expressed his gratitude to tradeKorea for arranging the sales, remarking that most of the inquiries since the outbreak of COVID-19 have not actually resulted in a business deal. In addition, the buyer appreciated the efforts of tradeKorea to introduce him to these quality products and hoped that they might contribute to mitigating the COVID-19 crisis even to a small extent.
