Xuan paper is widely used in Chinese calligraphy. Single-layer Xuan paper, "Dan Xuan," is thin and rather translucent. You can see through it if you hold it up against light. It is usually uneven in thickness and there might be occasionally holes scattering around the paper. Double-layer or thickened Xuan paper, "Xuan Xuan," is heavier and of course, thicker. Xuan paper has a very smooth surface and usually has a lot of visable natural fiber in it as well. People always call Xuan paper rice paper, but it's not; although it is a kind of mulberry paper.

When I was growing up, I used calligraphy practice books made of Xuan paper printed with grids, to practice my Chinese calligraphy. Since it is extremely thin, one has to put in blotter paper or cardboard underneath each page before writing with brush and ink. Xuan paper has a fresh and distinctive smell. It is rather comforting to indulge myself in that fragrance.

It's said that the ink does not spread once it's dried if written on Xuan paper, thus saving the artwork for thousands of years. I have yet to tried it to prove it.
