2. Rack-supported Building and Free-standing Rack

There are two types of construction method of AS/RS. One is Rack-supported Building (RSB) where the storage rack is used for building structure as well as for storage. The rack in RSB is stronger than normal because it endures wind pressure and earthquake. There are many benefits of RSB, the biggest one is economy in investment. By making warehouse building with simple wall and roof cladding material, the building cost and installation period can be reduced greatly.
The other is Free-standing Rack (FSR) which is installed in an existing building. The rack in FSR can be economic for it needs no consideration of extra force such as wind pressure and earthquake

3. Advantage of RSB

Cheaper Investment per pallet storage space:
Generally a RSB needs ground area of 2.2 to 3.2 square feet per pallet (0.2 to 0.3 sqmt) while a conventional warehouse 12 to 15 square feet (1.1 to 1.4 sqmt). The investment of RSB is much cheaper than that of conventional warehouse.
Lower Operation Cost:
RSB needs less workers than conventional warehouse with the help of automatic machines and minimized moving distance of workers. And the utility cost of RSB is less than that of conventional warehouse.
Lower Damage Rate of Goods:
By using automatic handling equipment the damage of goods is decreased greatly.
Safety of Workers:
The workers can stay outside of the hazardous storage area. And all dangerous jobs are done by automatic machines.
Faster and Efficient Cargo Handling:
Shortening of storage and retrieval time makes the loading and unloading to/from trucks faster and efficient.

4. Equipment in an AS/RS

Rack : storage structure which holds the loads
Stacker crane : automatic storage and retrieval machine working inside the storage rack
Conveyor : location-fixed machine transporting loads, such as roller conveyor and belt conveyor
Automatic vehicle : non-location-fixed machine transporting loads, such as AGV and RGV
Controller : electric/electronic devices which controls automatic machines
Inventory computer : controls entire system operation and manage inventory
Fire fighting device : extinguishes fire
Wall and roof cladding : covers AS/RS making it as a building
Foundation : supports building and equipment
Others : illumination, lightning rod, ventilation and etc.
