Current research in the FTTH field shows that 10~20% of mechanical connectors have maintenance problems right after installation and another 25~35% of the connectors need more maintenance after 2~3 year. Although fiber installers have always known the problems associated with low quality, weak durability and high installation cost of mechanical connectors, they have used them just because an alternative cost effective fusion splice-on solution was not available.
