■ What is lutein? ■

∙ It is an orange-colored carotenoid extracted from marigold (Tagetes erecta) flower. It is a component of the retina and the macula that is responsible for the center vision of the eye, which helps maintain the density of macular pigments that can be reduced by aging; thus maintaining eye health.

∙ Lutein is found in fruits and green leafy vegetables and should be ingested because it is not synthesized in the body.

∙ Lutein is an important pigment in the macula part of the retina. It protects the lens and the retina from strong blue light (sun) and protects against lenticular opacity and cell damage caused by harmful oxygen.

■ What is omega-3 EPA & DHA? ■

Omega-3 fatty acids are very effective in relieving the dry eye syndrome. According to “Ophthalmology,” a highly prestigious journal, the group taking omega-3 (EPA & DHA ) twice a day for 30 days showed decreased tear clearance and increased tear secretion and greatly alleviated the dry eye syndrome, compared to the control group.

The results above are attributed to the actions of omega-3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA. In particular, DHA, as a major component of the retina, helps maintain strong tear film; thus preventing the decrease of tear secretion. Thus it can prevent atherosclerosis, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke; it also prevents angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and cerebral infarction caused by blood clots.
